Your Guide to Understanding Sleep Solutions

The most common sign of obstructive sleep apnea is snoring. If you snore, or notice someone else snoring, that is a sign of the airway opening and closing in the person’s attempt to breathe during sleep. The most common symptom(s) of OSA are waking up not feeling refreshed, always feeling tired, and easily falling asleep during the daytime or waking hours. Screening for sleep apnea should be completed and, if necessary, a sleep test completed to get a confirmed diagnosis by a board-certified sleep physician.

Sleep apnea can be defined as Central (from the brain) or Obstructive (caused by airway obstruction). Also, depending on the AHI score (Apnea/Hypopnea Index), OSA is commonly diagnosed as Mild, Moderate, or Severe. Even Mild OSA should be treated as it will progressively advance and get worse over time.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea is treated by making sure the airway is open during sleep to allow for adequate breathing. Positional sleeping (sleeping on your side) may help. A CPAP machine (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) forces air into your nose and/or mouth to keep the airway open. Oral Appliance Therapy (OAT) positions your mandible to keep the soft tissue from collapsing in back of

the throat and airway. Sometimes, the best treatment is a combination of one or more of these.

That depends. CPAP has always been the first line of treatment because it is very effective. However, even though CPAP is effective, it only works if a person wears the CPAP, wears it correctly, and wears it consistently. Effective is only effective if it’s being used! OAT is clinically effective in nearly 95% of cases in the treatment of OSA. Compliance is much better with OAT compared to CPAP, so in that regard, it makes it the more effective option for treating obstructive sleep apnea.

Undiagnosed and untreated sleep apnea leads to a myriad of health issues to include the following:

  • Cardiovascular Disease (Hypertension, A-fib, Stroke, Heart attack)
  • Obesity
  • Kidney disease
  • Chronic inflammation
  • Type II Diabetes
  • Acid reflux (GERD)
  • Anxiety/Depression,
  • Sexual dysfunction
  • Low testosterone
  • Frequent nighttime urination

Ultimately, untreated sleep apnea leads to PREMATURE DEATH, cutting anywhere from 7-20 years off of a normal life span.

If you snore and/or have been diagnosed with Obstructive Sleep Apnea, then you are a candidate for OAT.

If you have tried CPAP therapy without success, whether due to intolerance or ineffectiveness, your insurance may cover Oral Appliance Therapy (OAT). Typically, your insurance provider will require a letter of medical necessity and/or an affidavit stating the ineffectiveness of CPAP therapy to approve coverage for OAT.

Most patients adapt quickly to using an Oral Appliance and experience the benefits of restful sleep almost immediately. After wearing the appliance overnight, a few quick exercises with the jaw muscles in the morning help realign the bite, ensuring comfort for the rest of the day.

the throat and airway. Sometimes, the best treatment is a combination of one or more of these.

The suitability of Oral Appliance Therapy varies depending on individual circumstances. Some patients without teeth may still be able to use an oral appliance if they have sufficient bone structure. Alternatively, the appliance can be designed to fit over existing dentures or utilize dental implants to secure it in place during sleep.

Explore the firsthand experiences and testimonials from our clients who have found relief and improved sleep quality with Brushy Mountain Sleep Solutions.

I am a 63 year old female who was diagnosed with sleep apnea in April 2024. I was having severe night sweats and only getting around 4 hours of sleep each night. I knew I couldn’t go on living like this!  I didn’t want to use a sleep apnea machine!  So after talking with my dentist Dr. Chris Roberts, he recommended a removable upper & lower appliance used for sleep apnea patients. So Dr. Roberts made my appliance and I began using it every night. After the first few nights of wearing the appliance, my night sweats disappeared and I started getting around 7 hours of sleep. I couldn’t believe it! The appliance is so easy to wear and easy to clean - just cold water and a toothbrush in the mornings. We like to travel, so having this sleep apnea appliance in its own small case instead of taking a noisy machine is well worth its weight in gold! Thank you Dr. Roberts for making my appliance! It has greatly improved my quality of life!
